FORUM: Stick to the facts on the quarry
By Greg Morrison | Posted: Monday, June 13, 2011 9:00 pm
It's always nice to have the facts on your side. Unless, of course, you are the opponents of Liberty Quarry, in which case you just make them up as you go.
Too often I see blatant misinformation being communicated about this project. A prime example is Nick Biddle's June 7 letter, titled "Are We Hypnotized Yet." This letter was full of misinformation that needs to be set straight.

Clarifying the issue of traffic, pollution reduction
Norman Block ("A leap of bad faith," Community Forum, June 8) and Phil Strickland ("Granite's 'SOC it to me' ploy," June 8) don't understand how Liberty Quarry's closeness to job sites will reduce traffic and pollution. Gentlemen, let me explain.
Assume a contractor needs 40 loads of rock delivered to Temecula. He calls his supplier, who dispatches 10 trucks based in Perris to haul four loads each from a quarry in Corona. Each truck will have traveled about 330 miles by day's end, including deadhead and empty miles. That's 3,300 miles for all 10 trucks from the time they leave their yard in Perris until they return. Anyone using MapQuest can verify the mileage.

Liberty Quarry will be beneficial to area
Some of the letter writers who are against Liberty Quarry have implied that people living outside of the Temecula city limits don't have the right to express an opinion in favor of the quarry. I notice they don't have a problem with residents of other cities voicing opinions against the quarry, only those who support it.
Well, as a resident of Murrieta, I say, "Hogwash." Liberty Quarry will bring a lot of benefits to this area, helping a lot of people in all the cities in Southwest Riverside County.

Temeculans support the Liberty Quarry
We are tired of hearing that no one living in Temecula supports the quarry. We do, and we live as close as anyone and in the direct path of all that so-called wind-carrying silica dust. We have taken the time to go to the open houses, go on the tours, we have read the reports and have seen all the modern equipment and mitigation measures that will be used in building and operating the quarry.

Breathing better with Liberty Quarry
Fred Bartz strains at a gnat and swallows a bear when he implies that Liberty Quarry will be close to residents of Temecula (Jan. 13). Anybody who has visited the site knows that this is not prime residential property. Stating that the quarry is "zero feet away" from the city is false. (I believe) the only reason Temecula tried to annex the property was to prevent the quarry from existing, and there's no guarantee that annexation will succeed.
The fact that Temecula missed out on annexing the quarry site and losing out on a lot of tax revenue has apparently created a sour-grapes attitude. If they can't have it, they don't want anybody to have it, end of discussion.
