Annexation is too costly

I just read the detailed financial impact report prepared by David Taussig & Associates Inc. concerning the financial implications of the proposed annexation on the city of Temecula. The report indicates that if the annexation goes through, our city will see up to a $300,000 financial hit every year. I know the city has said that we have adequate reserves to cover shortfalls, but with the recent layoffs, budget cutbacks and no end in sight for this recession, I am concerned.

I don't think the city has been straight with us, and I am now opposed to this annexation.

FORUM: quarry would be a win for region

By BOB KOWELL -- Murrieta | Tuesday, June 2, 2009 12:10 AM PDT ∞

Temecula is trying to annex a portion of the county to allow homes to be built instead of allowing it to remain a mining designated area and open space. This housing project is considered on about 700 of the total 4,997 acres. The homes would be on 10-acre plots.

No annexation for a new housing project

The city is trying to annex a portion of the county to build homes instead of allowing it to remain a mining designated area and open space. If Temecula is honest about building homes in this area, they will need to spend the money to install the infrastructure to the homes along with police and fire protection.

Why doesn't council recognize need?

Why is it that Temecula's council does not realize how important it is to find new aggregate sources for our region? Having a local source will help prevent costs from increasing and clear truck traffic by limiting the need to have aggregate materials brought in from outside areas.

Under the guise of an annexation to protect "open space" that is already protected by the federal and state governments, our elected leaders are thumbing their nose at the needs of their constituents.

Why is intent not apparent?

In response to Fred Bartz's question (Letters, April 7): "Conservation-hating environmentalists" means exactly that ---- environmentalists who live in their fanciful environment and despise the need for conservation.

Without Liberty Quarry, Temecula will be forced to pollute the air and congest the freeways by trucking sand and gravel from other areas. The conservation-hating environmentalists hate the idea of the needed water reservoir that will be there when the quarry is finished and hope to acquire its quarry land at taxpayer expense for their animal bridge across the freeway.

Writer has no credibility

I learned a long time ago that people who use alarmist tactics to win you to their position usually don't have the facts to support it. Nick Biddle (Letters, April 8) makes an alarmist plea to oppose the establishment of Liberty Quarry and its asphalt paving plant near the San Diego County border. He references a 3-year-old article about an antiquated asphalt oil refinery in a small town in North Carolina that may be responsible for ill health of people living there. I read the article, but I must conclude that he did not because the plant in question is not even an asphalt paving plant! And Mr. Biddle's reference to state Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth as a "treacherous local weasel" doesn't restore his credibility.

Letter's points selectively presented

Mr. Fred Bartz's letter, "Group unhappy to have quarry in their valley," March 18 once again omits certain key facts in order to present a negative slant. What the author fails to mention is that Save Our Desert did not criticize quarries, and in fact, the city of Indio has publicly applauded Granite Construction for being a good neighbor. The point that Save Our Desert was making in their letter is that it is unfair for certain parts of the county to bear a disproportionate share of the load when it comes to providing resources that every single resident of Riverside County consumes. Would Mr. Bartz be equally critical if the roles were reversed? I think not.

Environmentalists are wrong yet again

Well, here we go again. The conservation-hating environmentalists now claim that homes will shake at Liberty Quarry, but are incapable of discerning the difference between bombing and blasting. I have personally witnessed blasting at one of the largest and oldest copper mills in North America and both sound and vibration were almost unnoticeable at close proximity, but the conservation-hating environmentalists attempt to create issues to support their feel-good causes.

In 25 years, they have done nothing to bury the utility lines on Ynez Road and Jefferson Avenue between Rancho California and Winchester roads, but they will tell you how much they care about the environment. In the 1940s and 1950s, Californians managed the seal and sea lion populations until the environmentalists decided we needed to be natural. Now we pay a higher price for salmon because these herds eat the salmon and the sharks have migrated north to feed on the abundant herds, resulting in shark attacks.

As for the bombing on Camp Pendleton: Thank you, Marines for preserving America's liberty. The only bombs at Liberty Quarry are the baseless arguments projected by the environmentalists. We can and we must conserve and preserve California for its people, not special interest groups.
