  1. Living within one's means by invoking self denial and discipline, getting along with only those things that can be paid for, avoiding indebtedness for unnecessary luxuries or for extravagance to keep pace with others.

  1. Recognizing their value and promoting among the individuals within the Company, the formation of the following habits:

    • Concentrate on each day's duties as well as its opportunities to learn and improve, because tomorrow's advancements must depend upon today's accomplishments.

    • Regardless of the importance of the position held, listen carefully to instructions received from superiors and as carefully carry them out. If the instructions are not fully understood, return for a clearer explanation.

    • Realize that no one is entitled to promotion until he has learned, in his present position, to follow his instructions promptly, thoroughly and without having to be watched by the person who gave them.

    • Always be conscientious and trustworthy in the performance of whatever duties that are required, whether the task may be pleasant or unpleasant, thereby assuring the management that a promotion may be made without the experience thereafter of disappointment or regret.

    • Study diligently, building character and intelligence, thus making the present position lead to a life's work.

    • Review each night the entire day's work, remembering all mistakes and short-comings, resolve to improve tomorrow, never making the same mistake twice.

    • Remember that each instruction given embraces two necessary duties:

First - to perform the task with utmost speed, care, and accuracy.
Second - immediately advise the one who gave the instructions, that the work has been done thus preventing the necessity of his having to constantly watch and follow up.

    • Bear in mind continuously that when one has unquestionably demonstrated to his superiors, first, that he knows how, when, and where to correctly perform his duties, second, that he sees what he should do in his position and without being told goes ahead and does it, and third, that he requires no watching because he keeps his superiors advised of what he is doing and has done, he is then in line for and automatically will receive an advancement as soon as an opening for the same shall occur.

The Code of Principles was written by W. J. Wilkinson, President of Granite Construction during the mid-1930’s. The message is as sound now as it was then.
